COLD CORROSION MONITORING SERVICE (CCMS) FOR MARINE MAIN ENGINE CYLINDERS

Classic lube monitor used oil analysis

In collaboration with one of the most prestigious and experienced marine laboratories, Cockett Lubricants has created Classic Lube Monitor oil in service testing service conveniently global and of friendly - use for your crews.

The laboratory test results help you to:

  • Be aware of changes in the oil / engine condition
  • Recognize limits based on operational parameters
  • Base your decisions on recommended remedial action
  • Extend oil life and reduce costs
  • Quickly identify wear and tear and thereby reduce components and maintenance costs
  • Prevent unplanned maintenance / downtime
  • Compare oil properties and wear metal results for similar / different engine types
  • Detect leaking fuel pumps / injectors
  • Reduce possible spares failure in hydraulic systems

Once the test has been completed, you will find your report on our LUBE MONITOR portal under your dedicated account. The report is comprehensive yet user-friendly and can be shared by your teams on board and on shore. It also gives you a range of recommendations on preventive and corrective maintenance actions.

Cold Corrosion Monitoring Service (CCMS) for marine main engine cylinders

While slow steaming is here to stay in an increasingly cost-conscious industry focused on fuel economy and emissions reduction, long stroke and super long stroke engine designs have become the norm for modern vessels.

However, the combination of slow steaming – together with its operational conditions – and new engine designs have contributed to the appearance of “cold corrosion” of the cylinder liners (corrosive wear), caused by acid condensation within the cylinder resulting from a drop in engine operation temperature.

As part of our CCMS, we offer a unique piston underside oil analysis program to control cold corrosion and anticipate corrosive liner wear. By monitoring the parameters of piston underside oil, CCMS can detect cold corrosion of the cylinder liners in an early stage, and alert both onshore and onboard teams in due time.

CCMS monitors the following oil parameters:

  • Metal Content
  • PQ Index
  • Element Content
  • BN Value
  • Additive Level
  • Viscosity
  • Viscosity Index
  • Flashpoint
  • Water Content

CCMS enables the Chief Engineer to:

  • Identify cold corrosion of cylinder liners and provide early warnings
  • Extract comprehensive data on cylinder and ring operations
  • Monitor the wear and tear of cylinders and rings
  • Allow optimization of cylinder oil feed rate
  • Monitor condition of stuffing box
  • Be aware of the presence of contaminants (e.g. water and system oil)
  • Avoid over-lubrication of the main engine
  • Monitor operating conditions of cylinder oil lubricator

CCMS benefits, our service:

  • Contributes significantly to preventive maintenance savings
  • Minimises unscheduled down time of the main engine
  • Allows design and control of a trend monitoring programme
  • Contributes to engine components’ longer lifespan (e.g. cylinder liners, rings, and bearings)
  • Reduces cost of cylinder oil by allowing timely feed-rate optimization
  • Reduces operational costs
